Freeing China's Caged Bile Bears

Another disgusting practice from China. The group that is working on this issue is listed below with web site.

Freeing China's Caged Bile Bears
Animal activists aim to curtail trade in traditional remedy

CHENGDU, CHINA -- Jill Robinson's life was forever changed when she stole away from her tour group on a Chinese bear bile farm and descended a flight of stairs to a dark basement, where she saw the dim outlines of cages.

"I actually didn't understand what I was seeing at first," Robinson says. "Then it made me sick to my stomach."

Dozens of bears, kept alive only for their bile, were trapped in cages so small they couldn't move, their bellies spiked with crude, dirty, often- infected devices to allow the farmers to "milk" their bile twice a day and sell the fluid secreted by the liver as medicine.

Suddenly, one of the bears reached a paw out of its cage. Unaware that moon bears, an endangered Asian black bear species named for the yellow crescent on its chest, are among the most aggressive of bears, Robinson spontaneously grabbed the animal's paw and held it. She marvels that she still has her arm.

"In years later, it has shaken me and made me really believe there was a message there," she says.

Now the soft-spoken Briton, who went on to found Animals Asia Foundation - http://www.animalsasia.org/, based in Hong Kong, is pressing the Chinese government to ban bear farming outright before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and close down the farms where, according to the World Society for the Protection of Animals, 7,000 caged bears are being milked for their bile.

It is not an easy battle to win. Bear bile has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, from inflammation and heart disease to impotence, Parkinson's disease and liver ailments.

Still, Robinson has had some success in her crusade to save the captive bears.

A Moon Bear Rescue center she started in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has grown steadily, particularly since the foundation signed an agreement with local government officials to help shut down the worst of China's bear farms. So far, she has saved 185 bears.

The animals arrive at the 25-acre refuge, after being purchased from farmers for a price Robinson will not disclose, in crude devices such as "crush cages" with brackets used to force the bear's body down so it cannot move while its bile is being extracted. Full metal jackets, encasing a bear's entire torso, prevent it from ripping out the painful tube in its gall bladder, the organ in which bile from the liver is stored.

The rescued bears carry their own peculiar scars. Truncated paws, where farmers have cut off entire toes rather than declawing the bears. Missing and broken teeth from chewing on the metal bars of their cages. Patchy hair from malnutrition. Head wounds from "cage rage" -- repeatedly banging their heads on the metal bars of their tiny cells.

Veterinary surgeon Dr. Kati Loeffler tries to save the damaged bears. In one recent surgery, she operated on a bear named Minnie who carried a crude catheter wired into place, buried under two pounds of scar tissue.

"This can never be a humane industry," Robinson says.

The central government did not respond to requests for comment, but recently Beijing has allowed state-run media to carry a number of high-profile television and newspaper reports exposing cruel practices on the farms, an indication that forces in Beijing are beginning to lean against the practice.

In February, Vietnam signed an agreement with the society to phase out its bile farms, where an estimated 3,000 bears are held, a move that could put pressure on China and Korea to close bear farms on their soil.

Meanwhile, however, the steady stream of bile from farms is creating a burgeoning market for the product, not only in Asia but around the world, experts say.

A 2000 report by the society found bear gall bladders and bear bile medicines for sale in several U.S. cities, including in San Francisco's Chinatown, even though sale of the product is illegal in California.

The farms now produce an estimated 141,000 ounces of bear bile each year, outstripping even the growing consumer demand. In response, drug companies have started using excess bile in alternative products like shampoo, wine and health teas.

"We've reached the state now where we are incredibly frustrated with the inaction," Robinson says. "We are appealing, just begging the government to do something about this."

The farms have few outspoken advocates, but among them is Dr. Fan Zhiyong, head the fauna division of China's office of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, better known as CITES. Last year, Fan called for new rules to allow China to export bear-bile products.

"China has a large market demand for bear bile," Fan wrote in a widely distributed paper in 2003. "If it were not satisfied with bile powder from bear farms, this demand would attract poachers to kill wild bears, which would really endanger the survival of bears in China, and even of bears in other countries."

Indeed, China's bear farms sprang up after China outlawed the killing of native bears -- all listed as endangered species -- in the 1980s.

However, bear farm opponents argue that synthetic bear bile -- ursodeoxycholic acid, or UDCA -- is cheaper and just as effective. Professor Liu Cheng Cai, a medical instructor at Chengdu Military Hospital, one of China's top traditional medicine centers, says herbs and other medications negate the need for the animals' bile.

At one major pharmacy in Beijing, bear bile powder -- golden flecks packaged in small glass vials -- sells for nearly $100 for two grams. In a sign that the campaign to substitute herbal remedies for bear bile may be gaining ground, the pharmacist said it works especially well on liver diseases but is not very popular these days because of the availability of cheaper alternatives.

Meanwhile, word of Robinson's crusade is spreading. Visitors to the organization's Web site, www.animalsasia.org, are signing up to support the sanctuary with donations ranging from $5 for a pot of honey to $3,500 for a bear den. Superstar Hong Kong actress and singer Karen Mok has signed on as spokeswoman for the foundation, and crocodile hunter Steve Irwin filmed a segment in February on veterinary surgery at the sanctuary.

Although rescued bears cannot be released to the wild, having long since lost their survival skills, they are freer at the sanctuary than they have been in years.

At the center, which costs $80,000 a month to operate, more than 100 roam between indoor stalls and outdoor play areas, hanging in basket beds and climbing on timber toys.

New arrivals await surgery to remove catheters and repair wounds, pacing about in cages substantially larger than the ones they had been confined in, getting used to being able to move around. They work on simple puzzles -- such as finding fruit hidden in small logs -- to challenge brains and muscles atrophied by years of confinement.

Some of the animals, ranging in size from the stunted 50-pound Franzi to the 7-foot-tall, 300-plus pound male named Emma, even eat fruit from workers' hands.

"When you think they were consistently enduring all those pain sensations all their lives ..." says Robinson, her voice trailing off. "We wouldn't be so forgiving as a species."

Comprehensive List of Canadian Government Departments and Officials to Contact Regarding Seal Slaughter - Please Follow Through With

Yes, it's long, but don't let that intimidate you. Do what you can...but do something.

I have compiled a list of Canadian government departments and officials to contact to deliver your message that you will boycott all things Canadian until the seal slaughter is banned entirely. I wanted to do this because a lot of the emails we are receiving are from different groups and as such can leave people confused as to who or what to contact.

As it is always best to contact people or departments directly, I have provided this information for you. PLEASE don't let my work go to waste, and please keep it up for months to come. Please send an email or call, or even send a letter to these people or departments. To do so is easy and is probably our best chance at ending this unbelievable occurrence. It simply must stop.

Of course, contact information might change, so if any one comes across any wrong information, please let me know.

And more importantly - forward this to every list you're on, and every one you know! Let's start the work now to end the seal slaughter in the near future!

Any questions for me: justin@geari.org

Houston Zoo - Baby elephant euthanized

Houston Zoo - Baby elephant euthanized

I'm so sorry to send this article to you ...

Zoo's baby elephant euthanized

Bella, the Houston Zoo's baby elephant, was put to sleep earlier today
after zoo officials learned that screws used to repair her fractured femur
had already dislodged.

She was euthanized at 9:30 a.m. today. Bella would have been 8 months old
Sunday.

Zoo staff members who had a hand in raising Bella came in to say their
tearful farewells. After the calf died her mother, Shanti, and adoptive
mother, Methai, were allowed visual and physical contact.

Grief counselors will come to the zoo at 1 p.m. to work with the staff.

Zoo director Rick Barongi said it was a painful decision. They had flown
an out-of-state surgeon in to perform a rare surgery to repair the injury.

"Bella is gone. It just wasn't going to work," said Barongi. "It was a bad
break. It wasn't an easy break to fix. Everybody agreed that it was asking
too much of this calf.

"The vets and specialist said we can't repair this."

Bella was born Aug. 17 after a 22-month gestation period. At her first
public debut she played in a kiddie pool, pushed a plastic beach ball
around with her trunk and drank her special formula from a liter bottle.

Her birth was celebrated with a public naming contest and she became an
instant hit with zoo goers. Bella became a marketing sensation with her
likeness being displayed on billboards.

Bella somehow stumbled and fell Tuesday morning while walking in the
elephant yard. Surgeons performed a 2 1/2 -hour operation Wednesday and
were pleased with the initial results.

However, an X-ray of the repair injury this morning showed a much
different story.

Idiot Hunter Kills Well-Known Alaska Alpha Wolf

Another idiot hunter...

http://www.planetark.com/dailynewsstory.cfm?newsid=30508

USA: April 22, 2005

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The alpha wolf that led a famous Denali National Park
pack in Alaska was shot and killed by a hunter last weekend, causing
dismay among activists who say wolf hunting should be made illegal in the
state.

The dead wolf was the alpha male of Denali's Toklat family, a group of
wolves that has been studied for more than six decades and often seen by
visitors to the national park. The wolf was shot legally by a guided
hunter after it ventured out of the park boundary, officials said.
"I don't think that there's any doubt that there'll be fewer Toklat wolf
sightings," said John Toppenberg, executive director of the Alaska
Wildlife Alliance.

The 7-year-old wolf, which was identified by a radio collar that had been
attached by researchers, was only one of several recent losses for the
much-studied and frequently photographed Toklat group.

The alpha wolf had been behaving erratically and wandering near an area
outside the park where two females, including the alpha's mate, were
killed in traps over the past two months after they left the park in
search of food.

A 55-square-mile (140 sq km) buffer outside of the park protects wolves
from hunters and trappers, but conservation groups and animal welfare
activists argue that it is too small.

Cathie Harms, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game,
said the alpha's death would not affect Alaska's wolf population.

"One wolf out of a statewide population of 7,000 to 11,000 has no
biological impact," Harms said, "It is significant to people who have
developed an attachment for a particular pack of wolves or an individual
wolf."

But Gordon Haber, an independent biologist who has long studied the Denali
wolves, said the "decades-old Toklat lineage has suffered a virtually
complete social breakdown" as a result of the deaths.

Alaskans have long conducted an emotional debate over wolf management, one
that pits sportsmen who hunt moose and other game against advocates of
wildlife watching.

Online Hunting Firm Is Now the Quarry
Lawmakers nationwide are targeting a website that allows computer users
to fire at game roaming a Texas ranch.
By Nancy Vogel
Times Staff Writer

April 21, 2005

SACRAMENTO — So far, John Lockwood has had only two customers for his
new Internet-based business, yet lawmakers in California, 14 other
states and Congress are moving to shut it down.

Lockwood operates a website — live-shot.com — that for a few hundred
dollars lets anyone with access to a computer shoot and kill a variety
of animals roaming a fenced ranch in Texas.

A rifle, video camera and computer are mounted on a stand at the ranch
at a spot frequented by deer, antelope and sheep. From thousands of
miles away, via computer, a person can control the camera and gun,
firing with a click of the mouse.

Even if Lockwood doesn't yet have customers lining up around the block,
the mere notion that a venue exists for remote-controlled killing has
triggered a backlash of disgust, compelling lawmakers and forging an
unlikely coalition of big-game hunters and animal rights activists.

Lockwood's venture has offended sensibilities even in Texas, where many
private hunting ranches promise clients they can bag exotic trophy
animals such as impala and wildebeest.

"It's not hunting," said Kirby L. Brown, executive vice president of
the Texas Wildlife Assn., which represents landowners, hunters and
conservationists. "It falls off of the end of the ethical chart."

Scholars such as Dale Jamieson, a professor of environmental studies
and philosophy at New York University, also see Lockwood's business as
an understandable, if disturbing, extension of a computer society where
popular video games such as "Grand Theft Auto" let players pretend to
kill police officers.

Jamieson said people feel threatened by Lockwood's business, much as
they do violent video games, because both involve an unseemly delight
in killing. Lockwood's business, he said, undermines the central
argument in defense of hunting: that the joy of the sport comes in the
chase and in being attuned to the natural world, but not in the kill
itself.

"If you look at this as being kind of a continuum or slippery slope,"
said Jamieson, "you have people who enjoy the act of killing and
destruction in video games, you have people who enjoy killing animals
over the Internet…. But of course the next step in this is that people
start killing people over the Internet. That's the worry."

In February, state Sen. Debra Bowen (D-Marina del Rey) introduced SB
1028 to forbid Californians to use Lockwood's website or starting a
similar business. The bill faces a vote in the full Senate today.

Bowen said she shares a concern about where Internet hunting might
lead. "What happens if this technology gets expanded to other uses?"
she said. "It's actually pretty scary.

"What's the line between real life and a video game? It has all the
video game feel: It's remote, it's disconnected from the reality of it,
the hunter doesn't have to deal with any blood or wounding or tracking."

In Congress on Tuesday, Rep. Thomas M. Davis (R-Va.) introduced a bill
to make Internet hunting punishable by up to five years in prison.
Lawmakers in Texas, Maine and other states have also introduced bills,
some that would require hunters to be in physical control of their
weapons, others that make it illegal to kill a bird or animal by remote
control or via an Internet connection. Virginia has already imposed
such a law.

Lockwood, 40, a body shop estimator in San Antonio whose website also
offers target shooting, stands alone in the face of the backlash. He
has no outspoken supporter, but he is ever willing to defend his
business.

"I think they have a misconception about what it is," Lockwood
said. "They think it's a slaughterhouse. They think I'm going to
decimate the animal population. It's unethical because all I'm trying
to do is kill things."

But Lockwood said the animals on the 300-acre ranch, which is owned by
a friend and located 30 miles northwest of San Antonio, are essentially
wild and easily spooked. The only difference between an Internet
customer and one who visits the ranch to hunt, Lockwood said, is that
the electronic customers can't walk the land and their view is limited
to a narrow camera viewfinder.

Lockwood or one of his employees is always at the camera during
a "hunt" to control the rifle safety and make sure a shot is clean and
that nothing is in the way.

"Hunting is different for everybody," he said. "And everybody has their
own idea of what they think is ethical."

The idea was born last year when Lockwood showed a friend a video he
took while hunting. The friend mused that there must be a way to hook
up a gun to a camera. Lockwood said he was also inspired by
http://www.fantasyhunt.com , where people "hunt" by clicking a mouse to
take photos with a network of cameras set up in places frequented by
wildlife.

Lockwood argued that legislators haven't taken the time to understand
how his business can help disabled people or soldiers stationed
overseas enjoy the thrill of hunting. He said he has received inquiries
from soldiers in Iraq and Spain, including one who said he was less
interested in hunting than in getting meat to his family.

"Most people would prefer to be out there," said Lockwood. "But I do
get many, many e-mails from those who can't. Why deny those people that
opportunity?"

Lockwood features blackbuck antelope from India, fallow deer from
Europe, Barbary sheep from Africa and a variety of other sheep, as well
as wild hogs and native Texas white-tail deer, in season. But he is
also willing, he said, to import any animal a hunter is interested in
bagging. Meat processing and taxidermy services are also available for
an extra charge.

In Lockwood's first Internet hunt in January, recorded by a German
television crew, one of his friends shot a wild hog while sitting at a
computer 45 miles away. Lockwood, at the ranch, killed the boar with
two more shots.

In the second hunt, last weekend, Dale Hagberg of Ligonier, Ind., got
three clear shots at a fallow deer over two days of hunting. He came
away empty-handed.

An avid hunter before he was paralyzed below the neck in a diving
accident 17 years ago, Hagberg had sought a blackbuck, but it never
showed — perhaps sensing that Lockwood and several news reporters stood
in the blind near the rifle.

Each time Hagberg had a clear shot at a fallow deer, the deer moved
before Hagberg could use his tongue and mouth to manipulate the
joystick that activated the trigger.

"It was disappointing that he didn't get a shot, but the excitement was
there for him to get so, so close," Lockwood said.

Hagberg, he said, plans to buy a faster computer and hunt again.

Lockwood points to the failure of Hagberg's hunt as proof that it is
truly a "hunt," complete with hours of idle waiting for prey and ample
opportunity for it to escape.

"It's not about killing something," he said. "It's about experiencing
the thrill of the hunt, the boredom, everything that goes with it."

But Michael Markarian, executive vice president of the Humane Society
of the United States, called it "pay-per-view slaughter."

"This is a dangerous concept," he said, "because people may treat this
like a video game, and it's reality for the animals that are gunned
down and slaughtered."

Though Republicans in other parts of the country have sponsored and
voted for bills to ban Internet hunting, GOP lawmakers in California
have so far opposed it. The Senate Natural Resources & Water Committee
passed Bowen's bill April 5 on a 7-4 vote, with all four Republicans
voting against it.

One of those Republicans, Sen. Sam Aanestad of Grass Valley, is
troubled that Bowen's bill goes beyond banning Internet hunting in
California to ban residents from paying to hunt with Lockwood, said
spokesman Bill Bird.

Aanestad "has a problem with any legislation that restricts customers
from doing business with a legitimate company," Bird said.

Even if lawmakers bring an end to his Internet hunting venture,
Lockwood said his online target-hunting business — $14.95 for a 30-day
membership plus $5.95 for 10 shots — will survive, he said.

"The part that saddens me the most," Lockwood said, "is they want to
ban something that they're not interested in finding the truth about."

Red Bull Loves to Test On Animals

New press release from doctors against animal experiments regarding the red bull case

"Doctors Against Animal Experiments Germany revealed that soft drink producer Red Bull funded experiments where rat babies were drowned. According to its own account the company regularly funds animal research projects and is even proud of this.
Investigations of the German organisation Doctors Against Animal Experiments revealed that Red Bull supports harmful animal experiments. At the university hospital of Vienna, Austria, rat babies were drowned. Other rat babies were held under water for 20 minutes to study the late effects of respiratory arrest and oxygen deficit at the time of birth. "These experiments are cruel and unnessessary," says Dr. Corina Gericke, spokesperson of Doctors Against Animal Experiments. "The causes of respiratory distress in human infants, so called perinatal asphyxia, which is supposed to be mimicked here, are diverse and also totally different from the laboratory situation. Also the effects of this are already well-known".
According to its own account Red Bull funds also animal research in the field of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease on a regular basis. "These research areas are good examples for the failure of animal experiments", explains veterinarian Gericke. A study with an Alzheimer vaccination had to be stopped after several patients had developed meningitis. This side effect could not be predicted by the preceding animal test. Other pharmaceutical products which were successful in animals, so called cholinesterase inhibitors, proved little effective in humans but highly risky for unwanted side effects.
"Medical progress is of course important, but animal experiments are the wrong way, " says Gericke. "It is not understandable why Red Bull does not use its money for useful and reliable non-animal research instead of supporting flawed and outdated animal experiments." The Doctors Against Animal Experiments call for protests against Red Bull and calls the company to withdraw its funds from animal research.

Store locator for Whole Foods stores to tell them to stop selling veal

The previous post only listed stores in Colorado and Corporate. Use the link below to find stores in your area.

Whole Foods Market tackles animal welfare?? - stop selling veal and CEO Mackey's compensation

Please read article below which states what they are doing for animal welfare. So
does this mean they will stop selling dead, abused baby cow (veal)?
Maybe this is a good time to ask. If they won't, then this seems slightly
hypocritical. I have listed store numbers and locations below, as well
as his
contact information. Call to tell them to live up to their standards
and stop
selling veal! Now!

By the way...John Mackey's compensation found via
(http://www.aflcio.org/corporateamerica/paywatch/ceou/database.cfm?tkr=WFMI&pg=1)

Maybe he can start putting his money where his words are and start
donating to
the cause. Again, even 5% of his total compensation would go very far.
But
hey, he's so important he deserves it (right?!!)

John P. Mackey
Chairman and CEO
Whole Foods Market

In 2004, John P. Mackey raked in $885,216 in total compensation
including stock
option grants from Whole Foods Market.

From previous years' stock option grants, the Whole Foods Market
executive
cashed out $1,013,893 in stock option exercises.

And John P. Mackey has another $4,370,735 in unexercised stock options
from
previous years.

Whole Foods Market tackles animal welfare
Date posted: April 11, 2005
Malleau

Anne Malleau speaks at the Livestock Care Conference, hosted by Alberta
Farm
Animal Care (AFAC) in Red Deer.

The largest organic grocery store chain in North America has its sights
set on
new animal welfare requirements for meat suppliers – a move expected to
help
drive major animal welfare changes for the agriculture and food
industry. Anne
Malleau, Executive Director of the company’s new Animal Compassion
Foundation,
discusses six key challenges to implementing standards.

Austin-based Whole Foods Market is not your average food company.

Start with its uncommon beginnings:

* In 1981, a huge flood sent 10 feet of water and muck down several
Austin
streets, destroying Whole Foods Market's first store before it had
completed a
year of operation. The uninsured owners were set to close up shop for
good, when
a large group of neighbours showed up, shovels in hand, and spurred a
round-the-clock volunteer rescue effort. The store re-opened in less
than a
month and the experience led Whole Foods Market's co-founders to
structure their
business strategy around community involvement – a strategy they credit
as
integral to the company's dramatic rise to become North America's
largest
natural and organic grocery store.

Next, consider its bottom line:

* Though a small company by retail sector standards, Whole Foods
Market's
network of 168 stores generates an average $800 per square foot of
retail space
– twice the industry average. Last year, it generated over 3.3 billion
dollars
worth of sales, while being named one of Fortune magazine's "100 Best
Companies
to Work For" for the eighth year in a row.

Follow its history:

* For 25 years, Whole Foods Market has followed quality standards
aimed at
delivering the highest quality natural and organic foods available. It
was a
major player in the U.S. process of developing organic certification
standards
and has championed a range of sustainability issues.

Now, glimpse its future:

* Whole Foods Market is aiming to grow to over 300 stores by 2010,
including
expansion in Canada. The company has stores in Vancouver and Toronto,
and a new
store will open in Oakville this May. Building on its history of
driving
industry innovation, the company plans to establish a new line of meat
products
based on high animal welfare standards – a move expected to help drive
major
animal welfare changes for the agriculture and food industry.

What does this latest step mean for the future of livestock care
standards in
North America?

Anne Malleau, Executive Director of Whole Foods Market's new Animal
Compassion
Foundation, discussed the company's animal welfare initiative at the
recent
Livestock Care Conference in Red Deer, hosted by Alberta Farm Animal
Care
(AFAC). She outlined six key challenges to developing enhanced
standards.
Six key challenges

1. Ability to audit. "The most important thing is that we create
standards that
are based in science," says Malleau. "We want to make changes that are
actually
proven to be better for the animal – not just changes we think are
better for
the animal."

In 2003, the company recruited experts and stakeholders as advisors in
a process
that led to the development of a 15-stage plan for setting up welfare
standards
for various species. It started with ducks and is now at stage 13 with
that
species. Whole Foods Market has also started work on swine, lamb and
beef
cattle, and plans to have standards in place for all species sold in
its stores
by 2008. "In developing these standards, we have brought in animal
scientists
for each species, animal rights organizations, animal welfare
organizations,
producers and a third party auditor," says Malleau. "At the end of the
day, if
you don’t have something that you can audit, then you don’t have
anything."

2. Cost of production. A major challenge for any new standards that
require
producer participation is generating incentive at that level – a
challenge that
Whole Foods understands, says Malleau. "We recognize that welfare costs
money.
So with our new standards, the idea is that any producer that meets the
standards will receive an additional premium, as a profit-sharing
approach.'
Church

Susan Church, Manager of Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC).
Currently, all meat sold by Whole Foods Market is marketed under the
company's
"natural" line brand. The standards for this line, which centre on
organic
criteria, do include some animal welfare criteria. However, following a
confrontation with an animal rights organization at one of its
shareholder
meetings, the company delved deeper into the animal welfare issue and
decided to
establish the second "compassion" product line to feature enhanced
welfare
standards. "Our goal is to have the two lines run concurrently, and
each year
have the proportion of compassionately raised meat increase," says
Malleau. "The
enhanced line will be sold at a premium, so we felt a premium should
also go to
the producers that are willing to raise their bar to meet this
standard."

3. Disease risk. Another important issue at the production level is
disease
risk, she says. "Once you start looking at alternative welfare systems,
often
you start having problems with disease initially. A perfect process
requires
having the right animal on the right system and the right feed – that
takes some
work and adjustments. When you take animals selected for intensive
systems and
then throw them into alternative systems, that doesn’t always work."

4. Consumer willingness to pay. While Whole Foods Market believes in
the market
opportunity for the enhanced product line, it realizes establishing
steady
demand will take careful planning. “There are all sorts of consumers
that are
very supportive of higher standards, but it's well documented that what
consumers say they want and what they're actually willing to pay for
are often
different," says Malleau. "I think we’ll be able to get consumers to
buy the
product initially, but the challenge is to get them to do that
frequently and on
a steady basis."

5. Producer adoption. At the end of the day, everything depends on
producer
adoption, she acknowledges. "We need producers who are willing to try
new
things, and as a company we need to be prepared to help them through
some of the
issues that arise in setting new standards."

6. Constant improvement. Blazing a new trail is one thing, but Malleau
emphasizes that long-term success depends on ongoing improvement. "At
the end of
this first set of standards, we don’t expect to that we're going to
have the
answers to everything. But we're committed to continuous improvement
and having
these standards as a living document."

Report form the seal slaughter

I so much agree with the fact that this cannot be called a hunt. This is no hunt. If it is, it's the most unchallenging hunt in history. Killing baby seals that can't move or run is no hunt - except for the coward.

From:
farleymowat@seashepherd.org

Report from Captain Paul Watson on the Farley Mowat
April 13th, 2005
Position: 51 Degrees 19 Minutes North and 53 Degrees and 9 Minutes West
90 Miles due east of St. Anthony, Newfoundland
The Winds of Mercy Spare the Seals for a Second Day
Neptune is being good to us. The God of the Sea and Storms is sending another whirlwind of freezing rain on the heels of the gale that tossed us around yesterday.
The forecast this morning shows an area of low pressure over Newfoundland approaching southern Labrador this afternoon to lie over the Belle Isle Bank this evening as it intensifies. The low will gradually move northeastward to lie south of the East Labrador Sea Thursday afternoon. Strong to gale force east to northeasterlies developing ahead of the low are increasing to gale to storm force northerlies as it passes. Storm to hurricane force winds are expected to develop further behind the low late this evening or overnight and continuing tomorrow.
The Canadian Coast Guard has already answered more than 400 calls for assistance from vessels trapped in ice or with problems.
The latest news is that the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans will open the seal slaughter tomorrow morning. Considering the weather, this does not make sense unless DFO wants to take the Captain Abraham Kean approach to sealing and sacrifice a few men to kill the seals. So we anticipate that the seal slaughter will be delayed again and will not open tomorrow morning.
But we are standing by out here on the rolling waves in the event they proceed with such lunacy.
We still have our very own Canadian Coast Guard escort, the Henry Larsen. Feels almost like family considering my mother's family are Larsens. They have been with us for three days and stay about five miles off. The Henry Larsen is a big ship of a hundred metres, a draft of 7.3 metres and a gross tonnage of 6166 tons making her about 10 tens as large as the Farley Mowat. It is strange and somewhat flattering that as other Coast Guard units are extremely busy answering distress calls, that the Canadian Department of Transport can delegate one ship just to keep on an eye on us.
On another point I have had some criticism from Newfoundland because I have been referring to this massacre of seals as a slaughter and not a hunt. The fact is that I deliberately refrain from referring to this as a seal hunt.
I am an avid anti-hunter but I do know what hunting is and what it is not.
When you go into the nursery of a baby animal and club or shoot it when it is helpless you can hardly call it a hunt. There is no stalking, no searching, no tracking and no waiting. There is no flight by the animal, no resistance, no danger of counter attack and no great skill involved. I don't know of a single hunting activity that involves killing new born animals. This killing of baby seals is the equivalent of snatching helpless baby birds from their nests or shooting fawns during deer season.
We need to call it what it is - a senseless and brutal massacre of young defenseless animals. In other words a slaughter.
Magdalen Island sealer Pol Chantraine once wrote that he killed seals because their incessant cries filled his heart with a murderous rage and a desire to kill them to restore silence to the ice.
That sentiment has always mystified me. What kind of man would extinguish life to seek silence? The only answer that it possibly could be is the kind of psychopath depicted in the book and movie Silence of the Lambs.
I don't want the ice flows to be silent. I want them teeming with life and the joy of the newly born. It is incredible to be on the ice and hear the voices of life and it is heard best when you lie on the ice or swim in the leads where the sounds take on a completely different meaning on the level where the seals live with their voices only inches above the floes.
But people like Chantraine and I see the world through different eyes and I suppose that this is the great dilemma of humanity. Irresistible ideas in collision with immoveable traditions. And therefore it is push and shove wth all the attending animosities and hostility.
But no idea can evolve without conflict to test and strengthen it. Conservationism and especially the idea of animal rights are revolutionary perspectives that are relatively newly born and are the consequences of resource diminishment, human population growth, diminishment of biodiversity and the new empathy that is emerging as a result of people becoming more aware of the vast and diverse non-human world around them.
It is the evolution of a purely utilitarian approach to nature into a more harmonic inter-relationship with nature.
A clash of these two perspectives will take place tomorrow morning when I am scheduled to debate the Canadian Minister of Natural Resources John Efford, one of the more fervent defenders of killing seals.
This is the man who stood up in the Newfoundland legislature and said;
"Mr. Speaker, I would like to see the six million seals, or whatever number is out there, killed and sold, or destroyed or burned. I do not care what happens to them. The more they kill the better I will love it.'
And this from the man who is in change of safeguarding the natural resources of Canada. I wonder how many other natural resources, other species and habitats that Efford does not care about?
C.B.C. in Cornerbrook will be interviewing me onboard the Farley Mowat by Sat-Phone and Efford will be speaking by phone from Ottawa. It should be interesting.
Outside, I can hear the wind intensifying. Two low pressure areas in a collision course right in the area where the seals are and the sealers have congregated. It could be coincidence. It could be divine intervention. It could be karma. One thing it is for sure and that it is good news for us and the seals, for tomorrow for sure, and possibly into Friday.
Many of these sealers are crab fishermen and the crab fishery is more lucrative for them and is scheduled to begin soon. This means they have a limited time to kill seals so every day lost is a good day for seals.
Disruption rides these winds and the howling gales are sweet music to our ears. The darkening skies, the freezing rain, the plummeting temperatures all conspire to support our quest to save these seals. The decks of the sealers are not awash with blood but instead with freezing brine and thus we have no complaints today out here on the heaving Northwest Atlantic. For today at least, we are a happy crew

***Please Forward Widely! ***

International Call-In Day for the Seals!
Tuesday, April 12 marks the first day of the second phase of Canada's
annual commercial seal slaughter. During the first phase of the hunt, in
the Gulf of St. Lawrence, sealers clubbed and skinned an estimated 90,000
seals. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) observers present
at the hunt documented countless acts of cruelty and violations of the
Marine Mammal regulations. Now, in the second phase of the slaughter
beginning tomorrow on the ice floes off the northwestern coast of
Newfoundland, an area known as the "Front," sealers will likely kill over
200,000 more seal pups for their pelts to sell to European and Asian
fashion markets. To read the powerful journal entries of the HSUS
observers and to view video footage of this year’s hunt, please visit
www.protectseals.org.
Join activists and organizations around the world in calling Canadian
embassies and consulates, and demanding an end to the seal hunt. Tell
them that you are supporting the boycott of Canadian seafood and tourism
until this slaughter is stopped for good.

Homeland secure from leftists but not rightists ~ the wacked logic of the government again

From a Blog I read (non-ar by the way). I'm not surprised. I guess racists that want to kill (and explicitly say so and actually do) are not as much of a threat as the ALF whose mission it is to not harm any thing living in their liberations. Hummmm. Oh yes, and the Mc Veighs (sp?) and the David Koreshes (sp?) who actually were violent (don't forget about OK city death numbers) just aren't as large of a threat as peaceful vegans. Again though, I'm not too surprised.

Homeland secure from leftists but not rightists ~
The Congressional Quarterly reports on a curious Department of Homeland Security decision in, Animal Rights Groups and Ecology Militants Make DHS Terrorist List, Right-Wing Vigilantes Omitted. Homegrown acts of politically motivated violence span the spectrum from the ideological left to the right but Homeland Security has limited its domestic terrorist list to left leaning groups, excluding right-wing ones, such as, white supremacist and anti-government groups that have caused the death of hundreds of Americans.

Domestic terror experts were surprised the department did not include right-wing groups on their list of adversaries.

“They are still a threat, and they will continue to be a threat,” said Mike German, a 16-year undercover agent for the FBI who spent most of his career infiltrating radical right-wing groups. “If for some reason the government no longer considers them a threat, I think they will regret that,” said German, who left the FBI last year. “Hopefully it’s an oversight.”

No REcent Postings Due to Seal Slaughter - Please Keep Up With Calling Canadian Officials - Will Have New Postings Soon

Yes, due to this terrible situation, I will refrain for a couple of days so as to not over whelm every one. Let's just follow through with the seal killing calls first. Thank you all again. And finish calling the Canadian officials.

Comprehensive List of Canadian Government Departments and Officials to Contact Regarding Seal Slaughter - Please Follow Through With
