Police arrested two animal rights activists Monday after they chained and padlocked themselves to the doors of the Diocese of Rockville Centre headquarters to protest the diocese's support of the killing of deer at the Catholic seminary in Lloyd Harbor.

Therese Ferreira, of Huntington Station, and Deirdre Guelke, of Queens, both 24, were charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, said Jeff Kluewer, spokesman for Rockville Centre village police.

The women had chained themselves to the double doors of the diocese building at North Park Avenue in Rockville Centre around 1 p.m. The pair used another padlocked chain to bind themselves, he said.

Nassau County Emergency Services workers used a power saw to cut the chains. Ferreira and Guelke were taken into custody -- still chained together -- and released on appearance tickets, Kluewer said.

Neither Ferreira nor Guelke could be reached for comment.

Dana Gibson, spokeswoman for Concerned Citizens Against the Hunt, based in New York City and Long Island, said the group is trying to promote humane deer management on the seminary grounds and the adjacent Caumsett State Park.

The diocese was asked by the Village of Lloyd Harbor to allow it access to the grounds of the Immaculate Conception seminary to cull the 60-head deer population under a permit issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, diocese spokesman Sean P. Dolan, said in a statement. Officials say the purpose, which is ongoing, is for the safety of both the deer herd and humans.
