In an online contest sponsored by peta2, an international youth animal rights organization, Humboldt State University is ranked second in the nation.

Thousands of students were asked to vote for the most vegetarian-friendly college or university in the United States from a list of 30 nominees.

The winner was Indiana University in Bloomington, Ill., and the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., grabbed third place. Rounding out peta2's list were Yale University, the State University of New York-Purchase, Oberlin College, New York University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Florida.

The survey praised HSU for offering vegan stuffed green peppers, sautéed portobello over polenta, soy yogurt and many other meat-, dairy- and egg-free selections.

In a release announcing the results, peta2 said, "Nearly one-quarter of all college students ask for vegan options in school cafeterias."

Pulin Modi, peta2's college campaign coordinator, said, "Thanks to schools like HSU, eating healthfully and humanely has never been easier -- or more delicious."
